Floppy Install of TinyTERM 3.3 Fails on Windows 3.1
March 30th, 2007

When this happens, you’ll need to create the install diskettes again. When creating the floppies, boot to DOS to run 35floppy.bat. If you create the floppies in a Windows MS-DOS Prompt, you will get an valid install disks.

Out of Environmental Space
March 30th, 2007

When trying to create floppies using the 35floppy.bat file TinyTERM 3.3, you may see the above error. It usually means your hard drive is full or nearly so, with not enough workings space available to create the floppies.

Check the hard drive to see how much space is available. Free up as much as you can. If there is still insufficient space, you’ll need to use another PC to create the floppies.

ZMODEM and TinyTERM 3.3
March 30th, 2007

Using TinyTERM 3.3 and the ZMODEM file transfer protocol, you may find a situation where you can download a file from the host to the PC, but not upload from the PC to the host. When that happens, do the following in TinyTERM:

  • Click on the Transfer button.
  • Enter the required information.
  • Select ZMODEM as the transfer protocol, if it’s not already set.
  • Click the Settings button.
  • Place a check in the box next to Automatic Data Compression.
  • Click the Advanced button.
  • Set the ZMODEM/WTERMCRC Packet Size to 4096 or 8192.
  • Set the ZMODEM/WTERMCRC Window Size to match the packet size.
  • Click OK twice.

You should now be able to transfer files both directions.

If the PC is using the NTFS file system, the above instructions may not work when downloading files. It’s not just TinyTERM that’s affected by this. ZMODEM does not always write well to NTFS drives, regardless of the application you’re using.

Unable to Configure TCP/IP on Windows 3.1
March 30th, 2007

Using self-created floppies of the TinyTERM 3.3 install on Windows 3.1, you may be unable to setup TCP/IP afterward. This generally happens when the TCP/IP or network utilities options were deselected during the install. You will need to uninstall the current install, reboot the system and reinstall. Make sure you select both TCP/IP and network utilities on the reinstall.

TinyTERM 3.3 Causes a GPF on Windows 98
March 30th, 2007

When this happens, it means the original install did not complete properly. You will need to do the following:

  • Manually uninstall all Tiny Term products.
  • Reboot the PC.
  • Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to get the task manager. End all tasks except Systray and Explorer.
  • Install TinyTERM again.
  • When prompted to restart the computer, select No.
  • Click Yes and OK on all other dialog boxes. Some dialog boxes may be behind others, so make sure to close these windows carefully.
Telnetd: All Network Ports in Use
March 30th, 2007

This error does not come from the terminal emulator. Instead, it comes from the server. It means all the available TCP ports are in use. It may also point to a network problem on the host system. Contact support for the host system for more information.

No Login Prompt Over Serial Connection
March 30th, 2007

When you connect via direct serial cable, you may see incorrect, but readable, text instead of a login prompt. This generally happens when a process is still running on the serial port, which is usually caused by closing the emulator before logging out. The cause can be human error, power loss or something else.

To fix the problem, if possible get to a system prompt and log out. Otherwise, you’ll need to kill the process from the server itself, rather than from your workstation. Once the process has ended, you’ll see a login prompt the next time you connect.

File Save Problems in TinyTERM 3.3
March 30th, 2007

When using TinyTERM 3.3 on Windows 95 or higher, files may be lost after saving them. This can include scripts, .tap connection files, or files downloaded from a remote system.

The problem is long directory name support in TinyTERM 3.3. By default it installs to a subdirectory of C:\Program Files, but it doesn’t fully recognize the space in the path name. So when it tries to save, it uses any spaces in the path as file name separators. This causes files to be written to incorrect directories, or even to be renamed.

The solution is to uninstall TinyTERM, then reboot the PC and reinstall. On reinstall, change the directory path to a classic 8.3 name, such as C:\Century.

Unable to Save Modem Settings
March 29th, 2007

In TinyTERM 3.3, modem settings require specific steps to save properly:

    1. Go to the Configure menu and select Communications.
    2. Enter a name for the connection in the box entitled “Network Node or IP Address.” Make sure the name has no spaces or punctuation characters.
    3. From Port Selection list, highlight MODEM.
    4. Click on the Modem button to the right.
    5. Enter the phone number without any spaces.
    6. Select the correct modem.
    7. Click on Configure Modem and set the maximum speed of the modem to match the host system you’ll be calling.
    8. Click on OK three times to go back to the main TinyTERM screen.
    9. From the File menu, select Save ICONect.

You should now be able to connect to the host, and the connection should be saved.

FTP Client Missing in TinyTERM Plus 3.3
      March 29th, 2007

After installing TinyTERM Plus or TERM Professional version 3.3 from the October 1998 CD, you may not see an option for the FTP Client, LPR Printing or NFS Server, though they should be installed. (NFS is only installed with TERM Professional.)

To resolve this, manually uninstall the current product and reboot. Next, install TERM Professional using the 30-day evaluation. Make sure that the correct components are check-marked.

We also suggest you change the TinyTERM install path. It defaults to C:\Program Files\Century. Change the path to C:\Century (delete Program Files).

Once installation is complete, run the License Manager and upgrade your license. You should now have FTP Client, LPR Printing and NFS Server.
