Licensing an Evaluation Copy

Monday, April 16th, 2007

To add a full license to an evaluation copy of TinyTERM for Windows, do the following:

  1. Click on Start, then Programs, then TinyTERM.
  2. Run the License Manager.
  3. Click the Upgrade button.
  4. Enter your serial number and activation key.
  5. Click Update License.
  6. Close the License Manager.

To add a license to an evaluation copy of TERM for UNIX/Linux, the command is:

brand /usr/bin/term

Select option 2 to enter a serial number and activation key. They are case-sensitive.

If you have any problems with either licensing procedure, check the serial number and activation key for typographical errors. Also verify that the version of TinyTERM or TERM matches the version the license is for.

Evaluation Expired, but TinyTERM Starts

Friday, April 13th, 2007

If you installed a demo of TinyTERM, then added a license later, it’s still possible to get a message that the evaluation is about to expire. If you then enter the license in License Manager again, it says, “This serial number and activation key have already been used.” If you just click OK on the error message, TinyTERM starts.

This can happen if you installed the demo for one TinyTERM product, such as TinyTERM Plus, but bought a different product. To fix it, right-click on the shortcut you’re using to start TinyTERM. Select Properties from the menu.

In the shortcut properties, go to the Shortcut tab. The Target line will read something like this:

“C:\Program Files\Century\TinyTERM\tt.exe” -P52 default

The -P52 option is the first three letters of the evaluation serial number. Change it to the first three letters of your serial number. For example:

“C:\Program Files\Century\TinyTERM\tt.exe” -E52 default

OK the changes, and you should not see the error any more. But if it does come back, you may need to edit the registry.

Serial Number Does Not Match Activation Key

Friday, April 13th, 2007

There are several possible solutions to this error:

  1. If the version printed on the activation key card or listed in the license email does not match the install version, then this error will come up. Verify that the serial number you have matches the TinyTERM version you are installing. For example, older serial numbers will not work with the current TinyTERM download. And the serial number that comes with a TinyTERM CD is specific to that version of TinyTERM.
  2. Check the serial number and activation key for typographical errors. The serial number will always be 11 characters long: one to three letters, six to eight numerals, then two letters. No serial number ends in the letters “OEM”. The capital letter O will actually be the number zero in all cases. The activation key is always eight letters. Depending on the font, this may make the lower-case letter l look like the number 1. It’s never a number, though.
  3. When installing TinyTERM 4.52 from CD, you’re seeing a timing error. Despite what the install says, it’s not ready for the license yet.In this case, click the 30-Day Eval button instead. The install will continue from there. Once the install is done, go to Start | Programs | TinyTERM and run the License Manager.

In License Manager, click the Upgrade button. Enter your serial number and activation key, then click Update License. Close the License Manager. TinyTERM will then be licensed, rather than an eval copy.

  4. For a serial number that starts with the letters MMA, do not let the CD autorun. Instead, on the TinyTERM CD you’ll find a folder named “setup32_v33.” Run the setup.exe program in that directory instead. That will accept your license information.

SecureFT License Error

Friday, April 13th, 2007

When you run SecureFT, you may get the error, “The SecureFT license is expired or corrupt.” This is caused by registry damage to the SecureFT license. Normally TinyTERM will run properly when this happens.

To fix the damage, click on Start | Run and enter regedit, then click OK to open the Registry Editor. In the Registry Editor, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Century Software\SecureFT. You’ll see a License folder there. Delete that folder, then close the Registry Editor. SecureFT will run properly after that.

CR 764, fixed in TinyTERM Plus 4.60 with new licensing subsystem

Invalid Activation Key

Monday, April 9th, 2007

Installing TinyTERM 3.3 to drive D: will cause it to give this error on start. You must install TinyTERM 3.3 to the C: drive.

Serialization Error 25 Character Needed for Activation

Monday, April 9th, 2007

This error may come up installing TERM on AIX. It happens when you install the wrong version. For example, on AIX 5.2 you should installing files from /termunix/i6/4.2, rather than the /termunix/ai files. Also, the serial number to use in that case is the one ending in I6.

Network Utilities Not Installed

Monday, April 9th, 2007

After installing TinyTERM Plus Edition version 4.02 or 4.03, you may find there are no network utilities installed. You may also have noticed a CenLic32.dll error during install.

This is generally caused by installing TinyTERM Plus Edition over an older version of TinyTERM. To resolve this, do the following:

  1. Uninstall all versions of TinyTERM.
  2. Reboot the PC.
  3. Search drive C:\ for CenLic32.dll. Delete any copies you find.
  4. Install TinyTERM Plus Edition.

If you experience any other install issues after this, run one of the following install patches, whichever is appropriate to your version:

TinyTERM Plus Edition 4.02
TinyTERM Plus Edition 4.03

We also suggest you install Winsock2 on Windows 95 machine. You can download that here.

All Licenses in Use

Friday, April 6th, 2007

If you have a multi-user license of TinyTERM version 3.x, and an additional multi-user license of TinyTERM version 4.x, all users should be able to connect to the host, provided the host itself is licensed to accept them all. If you get a message that all licenses are in use, and the host can still accept logins, this may be a TinyTERM version issue.

If TinyTERM version 3 was installed using the isetup option, this could be causing your problem. The isetup routine tracks the number of TinyTERM licenses being used. TinyTERM version 4 does not use isetup, so its license is not recognized. To resolve the problem, you will need to do the following:

  1. Check the network for isetup or TinyTERM. Remove any that you find.
  2. Uninstall TinyTERM version 3 from the PCs that have it installed.
  3. Re-install TinyTERM version 3 directly to the same PCs.

You should now be able to use all your TinyTERM licenses.

Wrong Version of CenLic32.dll

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

This error is usually caused by installing a new version of TinyTERM over an older version. To resolve it, search the C: drive for the file CenLic32.dll. Right-click each copy found and select Properties. Check the version number against the version of TinyTERM you most recently installed. If they don’t match, delete CenLic32.dll.

When you are done, you should only have one copy. It will probably be in C:\Windows\System, C:\Windows\System32, or C:\Program Files\Century\TinyTERM. If it isn’t, move it to one of those directories before starting TinyTERM again.

If this does not clear up the problem, uninstall TinyTERM. Delete CenLic32.dll if it wasn’t removed during the uninstall. Then reboot your PC and reinstall TinyTERM.

Invalid License for Unknown Product

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

This error may come up after installing TinyTERM Thin Client Edition 4.02 on Windows NT Server 4.0. To fix it, uninstall TinyTERM. Next, search for the file MFC42.DLL. Rename any copies found as backups. You may have to boot to safe mode to rename MFC42.DLL.

Once you have renamed all copies, install TinyTERM Thin Client Edition again. It will complete normally, and and TinyTERM will start without errors.
