Supported Hardware for iOS Devices

Thursday, July 5th, 2012

Century Software’s ITX product line for iPhone and iPad support most devices that provide user input options. They also support some wifi devices.

Keyboards

Any Bluetooth keyboard is supported in TinyTERM on both iPad and iPhone. Dock keyboards that physically plug into the iPhone or iPad data port are also supported.

Scanners

TinyTERM supports any scanner that acts as a keyboard wedge. These devices all use the Bluetooth HID profile.

In addition, TinyTERM Plus and TinyTERM Enterprise support a number of hardware scanning attachments. This includes support for magnetic stripes, and 1D and 2D optically-scanned codes. A full list is available in the online documentation.

Serial Devices

WiFi-to-serial adapters are fully supported by TinyTERM. These devices generally create either an IP address for the RS232 port, or an ad hoc wireless network used only for the port. TinyTERM can communicate with either variety.

Neither the iPad nor the iPhone supports the Bluetooth SSD profile. This means that Bluetooth serial adapters cannot be supported by TinyTERM. The iOS option just isn’t there.

Serial cable support is currently disallowed for new applications by Apple. As such, no direct serial cable is supported by TinyTERM.

Function Keys Fail from External Keyboard

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

TinyTERM ITX version 1 for both iPad and iPhone could not use the function or arrow keys on an external keyboard, whether connected via dock or Bluetooth. That behavior was directly related to the way the keyboard presented itself to the iPad or iPhone under early versions of iOS.

With the release of TinyTERM ITX 2 and TinyTERM Pro for iPad and iPhone in July 2012, the arrow keys are fully usable. The function keys across the top of the keyboard are still reserved by iOS for its own functions, but the <b>option</b> key can be used with the number keys to mimic F1-F10 on an emulator keyboard. option-1 is F1, option-2 is F2, etc. Also, option-A through option-Z are Ctrl-A through Ctrl-Z, option-[ is the Esc key, option-dash (-) is Page Up, and option-= is Page Down.

Alternate Method for Deleting Configurations

Friday, December 30th, 2011

To delete a configuration in TinyTERM for iPad or TinyTERM ITX for iPhone, swipe a finger over it from left to right. However, this is not a method used by all apps for deleting configurations. Century Software has received a request to change the way configurations are deleted.

SSH Won’t Connect with Blank Password

Friday, December 30th, 2011

When using SSH with username/password or challenge-response (keyboard-interactive) authentication, TinyTERM for iPad will not connect if the password is blank. It expects a password to be entered, and the connection fails without it.

Custom Keyboard Justification

Friday, December 30th, 2011

TinyTERM for iPad and TinyTERM ITX for iPhone both allow the user to build custom on-screen keyboards. The individual key rows are automatically centered when they are drawn. Century Software has received a request to allow the user to set a starting position for the keyboard, so that it can be left-justified.
