LPD to Multiple Printers Drops Jobs

Friday, April 20th, 2007

With two or more printers on one PC running Century LPD, sending print jobs to more than one printer on that PC causes some jobs to be lost. This happens when there’s an error in one or more of the print jobs. Rather than trying again, the print files are deleted.

GPF in Spool32

Monday, April 16th, 2007

When configuring a new printer port in the LPR client, you may see a General Protection Fault error in Spool32.exe. This indicates a conflict with some other software running on the PC.

To locate the process, type Ctrl-Alt-Delete to get the Task Manager. Close one process at a time, except for Explorer and Systray. Test LPR after closing each. You can determine from that which process causes the error.

Uninstalling Century LPD

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

When uninstalling TinyTERM Plus from Windows NT 4.0, 2000, XP or Vista, you can’t uninstall NetUtils while CenLPD is running. CenLPD runs as a service on those versions of Windows. Only a user with administrator rights can stop the service so it can be uninstalled.

To shut down CenLPD, do the following:

  1. Right-click on the “hammer-and-wrench” icon in the task bar. This will be next to the system clock.
  2. Select “Stop CenLPD” from the pop-up menu.
  3. Right-click the icon again, and select “Exit.”

Once this is done, you should be able to uninstall NetUtils. If it shows the service as running still, you’ll need to stop it from Control Panel:

  1. In Control Panel, open the Administrative Tools and double-click Services.
  2. In the list of services, double-click CenLPD.
  3. Click the Stop button, then click OK.
  4. Close the Services panel.

Uninstall will work normally after this.

The Specified Location Does Not Contain Information About the Selected Hardware

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

This error comes up from TinyTERM Plus 3.2 on Windows 98 when installing LPD. It happens despite the directory C:\Century clearly containing the necessary information.

To get rid of the error, do the following:

  1. Remove the Marlpd icon from the system tray by right-clicking it and selecting Exit.
  2. Type Ctrl-Alt-Del and end all marlpd tasks that show.
  3. Go into the Century directory and run marlpd manually.

LPD Server Fails on Windows 95 or 98

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

Using TinyTERM Plus or TERM Professional in Windows 95 or Windows 98, if the LPD server will not start, do the following:

  1. Right-click on the hammer-and-wrench icon in the system tray, next to the clock on the Start bar.
  2. Select Exit from the pop-up menu.
  3. Right-click on Network Neighborhood.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Select Century Internet Services.
  6. Click on the Properties button.
  7. Click on the Options tab.
  8. Remove the check from the box in front of “Start Internet Services at Windows startup.”
  9. Click OK and OK again.

You will now be able to configure the LPD server and use it.

Unable to Delete LPR Port

Monday, April 9th, 2007

Using Century LPR on Windows 95, 98 or Me, if you run into a problem with an LPR printer port, you may want to delete it. You won’t be abled to if there are spooled files waiting to print, or if the port is being used by Windows.

To solve this problem, first cancel all print jobs for the printer:

  1. In LPR, select the printer window to make it active.
  2. Select the Printer status tab.
  3. Choose the Remote radio button.
  4. Click “Remove all.”
  5. Choose the Local radio button
  6. Click “Remove all.”

NOTE: Clicking “Remove all” only cancels your own print jobs.

At this point you should be able to delete the port:

  1. Select the printer screen or icon of the printer.
  2. Open the File menu.
  3. Delete the port.
  4. If this does not work, run the following commands on the UNIX system:
    1. lpstat -t to list all print jobs for the printer.
    2. cancel xxx, where xxx is the print job number.

Large LPD Jobs Fail in TinyTERM 3.3

Friday, April 6th, 2007

Using the LPD server from TinyTERM Plus or TERM Professional 3.3 on Windows 95, print jobs over 8,000 bytes in size sent to Windows 95 are not printed. When this happens, check the host system and the PC. Does either have a Compex 10 Mbps network card? If so, replace the network card. You should not need to change any settings in the LPD software. Print jobs above 8,000 bytes should now print.

MARLPD32 Gives an Error Instead of Printing

Friday, March 30th, 2007

Using TinyTERM Plus or TERM Professional version 3.3.8 on Windows 95 or Windows 98, the marlpd32.exe program gives an error instead of printing. The error comes from multiple copies loading themselves into memory. To fix it, do the following:

  1. Right click on the hammer/wrench icon in the bottom right hand corner of the screen, next to the clock in the System Tray.
  2. Select Exit from the pop-up menu.
  3. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and end all marlpd32.exe tasks listed.
  4. Drag and drop the marlpd32.exe program from the Century folder to the desktop.
  5. Launch LPD from that icon.

Host Does Not Have Line Printer Access

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

When printing via LPR and LPD, this error means that no LPD printer was found on the system receiving the print job. To fix the error, you’ll need to do one or more of these things:

  • Start the Line Printer Daemon on the print server. Without the LPD daemon, of course, it can’t receive print jobs.
  • Verify that the client has the correct hostname or IP address for the print server, and the correct name for the printer on the server.
  • Add each system to the other system’s hosts file.
  • If you are using SCO UNIX as the client, the print server must also be listed in /etc/hosts.equiv.

Once these items are verified, LPD printing should work properly.

Runtime Error in CenLPDStatus.exe

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

This error happens on some Windows systems running TinyTERM version 4.30 or higher. It stems from the CenLPDStatus.exe item added to the Startup group.

That program is the interface to the CenLPD service, which provides an LPD daemon for Windows NT 4.0, 2000, XP and Vista. If the service is unavailable, then CenLPDStatus.exe gives the above error to show that it can’t access CenLPD. Some of the things that might cause this error are:

  • Insufficient user privileges. If the user does not have local PC administrator rights, then CenLPDStatus.exe is automatically locked out of the services.
  • CenLPD has not finished starting. This is a timing error, with the interface loading before the service is ready.
  • CenLPD is disabled or has been removed. In that case, of course, there’s no service to connect to.

You can safely ignore the message. If you’re not using LPD at all, you can delete CenLPDStatus.exe from your Startup group to get rid of the message. You’ll also want to go through Control Panel’s Services applet to stop the CenLPD service in that case, to conserve system resources.
