Establishing Modem Connections Manually
In order to communicate with a remote host computer through a modem, first
communication must be established with the modem and command it to dial. If using
a 100% Hayes compatible modem, you can either use the TinyTERM Modem connection
mode to have TinyTERM make the connection for you, or you can use RS232 mode
to dial manually. To manually control your modem, follow these steps:
- On the Edit menu, choose Session Properties.
- Set your Connection type to RS232 and set the Available devices to the COM port to which you have attached your modem.
- Click OK, and then click the Connect button.
- Type AT and press ENTER. If the modem is connected properly, “OK” or “0” will be displayed (depending on the setting of the V command for the modem).
A response from the modem verifies that the connection between the terminal and
the modem is correct.
NOTE: If there is no response from the modem, make sure the modem is communicating
by typing ATQ0 and pressing ENTER. If there is still no response, check the
cabling for external modems and port settings.
- To connect to a host, type ATDT followed by the phone number. For example,
type ATDT 1-800-555-1212 and press ENTER to dial the phone.
- Upon connection to the remote computer, a connection message displays. At this
point, connection is made and communication with the remote host should be
established.
- To disconnect from the remote host, type +++. This will get the modem’s attention and allow you to enter a hang up command.
- Type ATH0 and press ENTER. This causes the modem to disconnect the phone line.
This is a basic example. The specific connection may require additional
commands. See the modem documentation for more specific details.
