Linux Emulation Display Problems

Friday, April 20th, 2007

In some full-screen applications, text isn’t drawn properly. Text color may not shift properly. Some characters may be underlined when they shouldn’t be. The alignment may be off.

These are all related to changes made in the Linux console alongside various kernel updates. They were corrected in TinyTERM 4.40.

HANGUP Causes TERM for Linux to Hang

Friday, April 20th, 2007

Using TERM for Linux 6.2.5b, connect to a tty that has a modem installed. Connect to the modem, then go to the TERM menu, or type ^E to get the c=> prompt, and type H for Hangup. TERM locks up. The TSL HANGUP command will do the same thing. This is fixed in TERM 6.28.

CR 349

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

WAIT and DWAIT do not time out in TERM for Linux 6.2.5b. This was fixed in TERM 6.28.

CONFIG SET Core Dumps Linux

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

The TERM Script Language command CONFIG SET causes Linux to produce a segmentation error and exit TERM 6.2.5b with a core dump. That TSL command loads the configuration variables into the current settings. It was fixed in TERM 6.28.

CR 219

CR 12

No Line Draw Characters Using Linux Emulation

Friday, April 13th, 2007

Using the Linux emulation in TinyTERM 4.x, you may not get the correct line draw characters. Changing the font in TinyTERM and setting the Use non font-based line draw characters option in the Session Properties don’t help.

Newer Linux systems use UTF-8 or Unicode characters for their console, but many applications still don’t. To disable Unicode for the session, at a system prompt enter:

unicode_stop

To turn it back on, the command is:

unicode_start

To disable UTF-8 on an English-language system, the command is:

LANG=en_US;export LANG

Restoring UTF-8 uses thie command:

LANG=en_US.UTF-8;export LANG

TinyTERM 4.40 or higher also has a Unicode mode that may resolve the issue on some systems. Open the Session Properties and go to the Code Page tab. In the lower left, change the drop-down option from “Pass through” to “UTF-8.” OK and save the changes. That will work on most systems using UTF-8.

Non-Expired Lockfile

Wednesday, April 11th, 2007

When TERM for UNIX gives the error, “Non-expired lockfile lck..inittab,” make sure the permissions on the whole structure of /usr/spool/uucp are at least 666 (-rw-rw-rw-).

For TERM for Linux, the directory path is normally /var/spool/uucp. If TERM for Linux is configured for /usr/spool/uucp instead, this error will result even if permissions are correct on /var/spool/uucp.

CR 277
CR 573, Linux spool directory fixed in TERM 6.28

Bad Screen Formatting in TERM for Linux

Thursday, April 5th, 2007

Using Term for Linux version 6.2.5b, the screen does not format properly in all cases. If the display is not right, execute the following two commands at a shell prompt. You may also want to put them into your .profile:

termcap=/etc/termcap
export termcap

CR 472, not needed in TERM 6.28
